Pizza with Blue Cheese, Apples, and Arugula

I had one of the best pizzas – Roquefort, green apples, and arugula – at a little French cafe called Match 65 in NYC this summer. The flavors were strong but so great together that I decided to recreate a slightly milder version this past weekend. (Y’all know how I love to add a little vacay yumminess to the at-home dinner rotation :-))

When my sis informed me that I was chosen as the “personal shopper” to help my niece choose a dress for her upcoming Sweet Sixteen party, I was like, “Wait, now what now?!” I mean, did she say, “SIXTEEN?!” *Wiping forehead, and counting on fingers (and toes) to figure out how old that makes me* Once I got over the initial shock – and the subsequent aftershocks every time I thought about how that chubby, little baby got to be sixteen-years-old overnight – I threw this outfit on, and we had a ball picking out hot pink party dresses 🙂

Hubby and I had dinner at Lure this past weekend, and both the food and the service were AMAZING! Oyster sliders, calamari, crusted sole with capers and spinach… just YUM. Afterwards, we hung out a bit at Cafe Intermezzo, where the woman who took our orders said my above outfit was “colorful” and where I had my usual hot chocolate Berlin. I order that every single time, no matter how hot it is outside 🙂

Personal Shopper: What to Wear to a Tea Party (Part I)

Tags

, , , , , ,

A friend and her daughter are attending an afternoon tea party at the St. Regis Hotel (*squeal) this winter, and she asked me for some ideas as to what to wear (*more squeals). Right after I added “afternoon tea at the St. Regis” to my own list of things to do this winter, I got to work 🙂

Zara

My friend expressed an interest in a peplum silhouette, and I think that’s a great choice, as the shape adds a touch of formality, and it’s both classic and of-the-moment. I love Zara’s winter white twist on the style, reading as more of a frill than a full peplum.

HAPPY LABOR DAY!!!

Inspired to get a few more miles out of this pleated A-line dress, I added two easy pieces — a tied-and-tucked denim shirt and leopard print scarf — for a girls’ day out this weekend. Special thanks to Valerie of Just Don’t Be Last for snapping these pics 🙂

No Ma’am!

For kicks and giggles, I thought I’d show some of the unfortunate outfits that were just not post-worthy. The really sad thing is not that these looks were anything but stellar (we all have those moments, right?) but rather that I actually wore these atrocities – probably with a smile, too – somewhere after I took these pics. Womp. Live and learn 🙂

I like each of these pieces individually, but together… not so much. This was a big mixed stripe-mixed texture fail.

Cable Knit Sweater Dress (this one is similar)

My BFF sent me the above picture of her cute, cute sweater dress – she always scores the best pieces – and asked me for some ideas as to how to style it, “please and thank you.”

She doesn’t subscribe to the whole no-white-after-Labor-Day thing, so click through to see my suggestions for transitioning this dress into fall 🙂

Say What? Allure Magazine

Tags

I try to keep it positive and sunny here at Joy and Sunshine, but this single sentence that had the nerve to be called a “tip” made me hot mad.

Photo courtesy of Allure Insiders’ Guide to Beauty & Style (Fall 2012, pg 96)

Hub and I were driving back from a trip to the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC (I wanted to document our fun, fun ropes course/zip line adventures there, but snapping pics while clinging to a harness and trying to walk across a piece of wire 20ft in the air was a no-go. I’ll get it next time, though!). My magazine-reading, sit-back-and-leave-the-driving-to-the-hubby moment was interrupted when, amidst some pretty decent beauty info, this TIP. I nearly lost it, launching into a tirade on how utterly impossible it is for women to meet these ever-changing beauty standards. Not only do I have to ask, “Hon, do my jeans make me look fat,” now I need to add, “Does my bikini line make me look fat” to the list?

It’s not just this tip in and of itself. It’s more the principle at work, that here is yet another thing the beauty industry wants women to be self-conscious about, probably to sell more of some product or other. Of course, I had to get hub’s opinion on this matter, and of course he played it cagey, saying “You should do a post about that.” Translation: I’ve been a happily married man too long to let some magazine mess it all up. Whatever his motivation (LOL), I have to admit it was a great suggestion 🙂

What do you think about the standards of beauty for the modern woman? Have you read or heard something that you thought was taking modern beauty standards just a bit too far? Please, weigh in!

Another FAB FINDS list! Whoo-hoo! Okay, I’m way too crunk; let me turn it down a bit. *adjusting crunk volume to “appropriate” Check out some of the late summer/early fall Fab Finds I spotted in Target – also known by its French government name, Tar-Jay – recently!

Follow me on Twitter @JoySunshineBlog for more fab finds, sale alerts, and more!

How cute is this owl print sweater?! I can see it prepped out with a button down underneath, layered under a blazer, or with some printed pants, or… I really think this is one of those high-personality pieces that can be styled lots of different ways.

Print Mixing 101: Part III

Blazer: J Crew/ Shirt: J Crew (styled differently in THIS POST; find similar here)/ Skirt: BCBG (more HERE)/ Shoes: Arturo Chiang (also worn HERE)/ Sunnies: Ray-Ban

Well, here we are: the third installment of my 3-part Print Mixing 101 series! (CLICK HERE to check out Print Mixing 101: Part I, and HERE to read Part II.)

  • Wear a balancing piece to connect prints/patterns. A blazer, cardigan, or vest visually separates the two prints, adding cohesiveness to the look.

FYI: My hubby said this skirt is too short. I knew it was short when I bought it – that’s what I liked about it I fell in love with the cute leaf print – but for him to 1) offer an opinion at all, and 2) actually use the words “too” and “short” consecutively with respect to something I’m wearing… Well, there might be some merit to the statement. I mean, this is the same guy who’s been trying to convince me that my “legs look fine” since college, back when I was way too self-conscious to consider wearing something super short. ANNND this is the same guy who, when I was trying on shorts in American Eagle (and you know how length-challenged those shorties are!), said, “You should get two pairs of those.” Anyhoo…point taken.

Top: J Crew (love this one, too)/ Pants: J Crew (also worn HERE)/ Shoes: Circa Joan & David (also in THIS POST)/ Bracelet: thrifted and J Crew/ Sunnies: Ray-Ban

  • Wear solids in different textures. These two textures – eyelet and a tonal herringbone linen – mimic the look of wearing mixed patterns without the commitment of actually doing so 🙂

What do you think of this series? Helpful? Fun? Not to put words in your mouth, of course 🙂
